![]() The exact technology behind the stem separation in VDJ 2021 is largely a trade secret, with VirtualDJ owner Stephane Clavel only giving us some sparse details. Being able to isolate any major part not only of all your own music library but the millions of tracks opened up by streaming from SoundCloud, Deezer and Beatport LINK has huge implications for how DJ’s perform and what’s creatively possible. You can even fade these different parts in and out, like controlling a mixing desk in a studio, lowering the vocal only, or bringing down the kick, muting the bassline or isolating just the instruments. VirtualDJ 2021 makes the bold claim that not only can it separate stems and parts from existing stereo tracks that are fully mixed down, it can do it in real-time right there in your DJ software. So while the idea was solid, the implementation meant it never made its way into the shared DJing consciousness. ![]() Problem was, it was restricted to Traktor, it took a lot of prep in advance and your whole back catalogue had to either be re-bought or transferred into stems format from the parts you already owned. It came with accompanying hardware and new software that let producers create their own stems to use in Traktor, while Beatport also jumped on board to sell tracks in STEMS format. It’s been something of a holy grail for many DJs and producers over the years, so much so that Native Instruments even introduced a whole new format called STEMS back in 2015. Stem separation is basically a fancy way of saying you can isolate the vocals, drums, bassline or any other element of the track, without the need for an official acapella or instrumental. But with VirtualDJ 2021, the French company has added something genuinely innovative that has the potential to shake up how we approach DJing for good. ![]() You’d be forgiven then for thinking VirtualDJ would shy away from innovation in favour of appealing to the masses, and would only add more experimental or advanced features when they’d been adopted by the wider industry. While many other DJ software continues down the road of closed systems designed for specific hardware, VDJ’s one-size-fits-all approach continues to make it hugely popular for all skill levels and budgets. Complete newbies can be presented with a stripped- back, simple GUI, with friendly artwork, only the core controls and an easy-to-use, two-deck interface.Īs your DJ skills progress and you want to explore more features, there are endless built-in tutorials, customisation options, third-party extensions and an extensive list of compatible hardware, from the cheapest sub-£50 portable unit to the industry-standard Pioneer DJ 2000nxs2 CDJs. What makes Virtual DJ so appealing, apart from the fact that it’s free for basic use, is its flexible nature. That might come as a surprise to some, but with 121,470,946 downloads, and counting, the versatile entry-level and competent professional DJing solution is the go-to option for many hobbyist, mobile and bar DJs in hundreds of countries. Virtual DJ is the most popular DJ software in the world. ![]() ![]() This tells us that each one of the smaller hash marks corresponds to an angular change of one degree. So then, what exactly is this angular reading? Well, if we look and count carefully, if we start at 70 degrees, we can see there are one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, and then nine small hash marks in between the two large hash marks corresponding to 70 and then 80 degrees. But rather, we’ll look at the top scale, where we’re about at 80 degrees. Which tells us, when we read off the angular measure of this first arm, we won’t look at the bottom scale, the one where we’re around 100 degrees. If we start from there and we go up to the first ray, or first arm of our angle that we encounter, we can see we go from 10 degrees, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, and around to 80 degrees. Since we’re reading this angle going from left to right, that means we’ll start at the far left side of our protractor at the angle zero. But since we’ve not done that in this case, since this angle is not rotated so one arm lies along zero degrees, that means we’ll need to read out the read directions of both of these arms and find the difference between them. Just as a quick side note, if we had aligned this angle so that one of the arms was laying along the zero degree marker, then we would only need to read out the position of the other arm relative to that. ![]() But just to pick one of them, let’s choose the bottom option, where our arrow moves from the left side to the right side. Considering these two options for a solution, we can pick either one. Whichever way we do it, we know that the angle □ will have a positive value to it. That means we could also measure the angle □ going right to left, like this. And in both cases, we could have zero as our starting point. That’s so we could read an angle going left to right this way or right to left this way. Now, taking a quick look at our protractor, we see that both ends have markings of zero as well as 180 degrees. The measurement of this angle, the value of □, will be the angular displacement from one arm to the other. Looking at the diagram, we see the angle □, which is defined by these two arms or rays coming out from the midpoint of our protractor. The diagram shows a protractor being used to measure the angle □. ![]() This development appeared more difficult for Mom than for Dad, due perhaps to her background. She clipped drawers-full of recipes from food mags, attended culinary schools in Europe, cooked ever more delicious meals for us all. Instead, most of the slick, tight production and arrangements here ultimately end up clashing with Springsteen’s vocal style. Even within the confines of the recording studio, Springsteen could have applied a bit more of the underlying raw energy which defines a lot of his original work to at least a few of these songs. Springsteen has always had some success with cover songs as radio hits, including Tom Waits’ “Jersey Girl,” Edwin Starr’s “War” and Mitch Ryder’s medley of “Devil with the Blue Dress On” and “Good Golly Miss Molly.” But these were all live recordings, fueled by both the energy of a concert crowd and that sense of spontaneity. Springsteen closes out the album with probably the three best-known songs among the bunch, the Four Tops’ “7 Rooms of Gloom,” Jimmy Ruffin’s “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted,” and Diana Ross & the Supremes’ “Someday We’ll Be Together.” The last of those, lyrically at least, is as poignant a message for these divided times as it was when it was a hit in 1969, and while Springsteen’s intentions are clearly well-placed, his imbalance with the source material continues to be a problem. The record’s one venture outside of R&B, “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore,” a song recorded by countless artists (including the Walker Brothers, Neil Diamond, and Springsteen’s fellow Jersey boy Frankie Valli) proves to be the unexpected highlight. Still, unfortunately, that’s far from the case with every song: the Boss’ gruff and raw voice simply clashes with the way that these songs were initially intended to be performed, and as a result, quite a few songs range from marginally grating to utterly unlistenable. That slow song proves a decent enough match for Springsteen’s vocal style (which by now should be familiar to just about everyone). Marvin Gaye is only present as the subject of the first single “Night Shift,” itself a fairly surprising choice, being not only from the ’80s but also originally the sole hit for the Commodores after Lionel Richie left the group. ![]() Sure, the Temptations and the Four Tops are represented, but other seemingly obvious choices such as Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robison are ignored in favor of comparatively more obscure R&B artists such as Jerry Butler, William Bell, and Frank Wilson. If nothing else, Springsteen can be given credit for not making many too many predictable selections in picking out the material. The results are heartfelt but not entirely fulfilling. Now, Bruce Springsteen joins that club with his new album Only the Strong Survive, a record comprised mainly of R&B songs from the ’60s through the ’80s. However, it’s probably closer to being a rite of passage, as Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, and three out of four ex-Beatles have all released cover albums. clearly shows him already well on his way.Bruce Springsteen – ‘Only the Strong Survive’ Album ReviewĪt the outset, a major artist doing a studio album comprised entirely of songs made popular by other artists may seem like a lazy way to stay in the public eye and/or take care of one contractually-obligated release. Springsteen hadn't yet transformed into the Rock God he'd soon become, but THE WILD, THE INNOCENT. "4th of July, Asbury Park" and "Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)" are unlike anything that had come before them, story-songs full of shifts in tone, dynamics, and mood that are as surprising as they are evocative. "Wild Billy's Circus Story" marks the point on wildly divergent career paths when Springsteen and Tom Waits seemed to intersect. This would be the only time the cinematic vistas of Springsteen's early lyrics were matched by equally impressionistic music. While this is solidly a rock record, there are hints of jazz, blues, soul, Latin music, and more. Though the signature Spector-on-steroids E Street Band sound wouldn't fall fully into place until the next album, this one sounds like a sudden realization of a universe of musical possibilities. ![]() The most musically expansive record of his career, THE WILD, THE INNOCENT & THE E STREET SHUFFLE found Bruce beginning to find his own sound, moving beyond the Dylan-meets-Van Morrison folk-rock of his debut. Bruce Springsteen's second album found him at a pivotal point in his development.
